10 Facts about Artaud!

We have just started a new topic about the theatrical styles of the theatre practitioner Antonin Artaud. We will learn a bit more about him later in the logbook process however right now, I did a bit of research and found out 10 facts about his man.

  1. He was the son of a wealthy shipfitter (marine occupational classification used both by naval activities and among ship builders) and his mother was of a Greek background.

  2. When he was 5 he suffered a very serious case of meningitis which lingered with him even later.

  3. At age 14 he founded a literary magazine that ran for almost 4 years!

  4. Still during his teens he was a victim of neurasthenia and was treated in a rest home.

  5. He was given opium as a medicinal treatment but he soon got addicted to it.

  6. He joined the army in 1916 but he was expelled due to mental instability and drug addiction.

  7. He went to Paris after a few years and started acting in various movies an on stage shows.

  8. Artaud was the mentor of Jean-Louis Barrault who was a French actor and created ‘centaur horse’

  1. After his failure in the theatrical world, Artaud went to Mexico, where he spent time with the sun-worshipping Tarahumara Indians.

  2. He went to Ireland soon after and was announced mentally unstable and was air lifted straight to France. His most influential work Le Théâtre et son double (The Theater and Its Double), was published shortly after.
