Criticism is SO helpful

So today is the first day I performed for someone! I took Margaret away and asked her to criticise the heck out of my performance because I REALLY needed it.

This is what she said:

• She should have a bottle of wine, but should not be slurring her words or really drunk.

• Sanjana really needed to quicken the pace of the monologue because it was monotonous to listen to because it was all such a slow pace

• There needed to be more of a bell shaped journey to Sanjana's piece, so we went through and determined the point at which the piece was most climactic.

• We talked about costume, and Sanjana said that she did not want to be wearing a skirt, but rather a jumpsuit or something less feminine.

• We said that Sanjana should remove her heels before she tells the story, as if it has been a long work day and she is tired and needs to take off her heels and have a drink

• We talked about the way in which Sanjana should deliver her lines towards Jean. Jean is the man that she loves, and she must therefore treat him with respect. At the beginning of the monologue many people shout the lines so I suggested that she take a different approach. A loving ‘yes we must run away’ and then a more direct but not angry ‘but first we must talk’.

This was SO helpful because now I have a foundation to work on. I know what things i need to improve on and what I am doing well. She also helped me with costume and staging and blocking choices. Thanks Marg!
