NEW TOPIC: PHYSICAL THEATRE!!

TODAY WE STARTED A NEW TOPIC AND I AM IN LOVE WITH IT!

The style of theatre is called Physical Theatre and we are looking at the theatre company 'Frantic Assembly' for specificity.

We got our groups and I am actually really happy with my group this time. I predict that we will work well together. I am in a group with Lola, Tash, Ollie, Freddie and Sophie and all of them have really good work ethic.

We chose the topic of Gender and Sexuality and these are some of the questions on the subject matter that each of us individually answered.

  • Describe your understanding and opinion of gender and sexuality.

  • The idea of gender and sexuality in today’s society has been altered from the ideals 50 years ago. The idea of having just two genders don’t exist anymore.

  • Have you ever encountered or heard/read stories on these issues?

  • Ellen page

  • Ellen DeGeneres

  • Orlando shootings

  • Aubrey Plaza

  • (Optional question) Have you ever had a personal experience with these issues?

  • Yes. My cousin came out as Bisexual to me and she didn’t know what to do because she lived in a society where being gay openly was not socially accepted.

  • In what situations do you think these issues are particularly relevant?

  • Situations where people are different to each other.

  • What does it feel like to be oppressed?

  • I have never been oppressed

  • How do you overcome oppression?

  • Never thought about it

  • Is there anything about this project that you are nervous about?

  • Offending a group of people

  • Is gender equality a concern for men? Give your personal opinion.

  • Yes of course it is. Men can be sexualised too. Maybe not exactly the same way that women are but they are sexualised in a different way.

  • Describe a moment you might’ve felt less equal or of less importance than another person or group?

  • Well auditioning for things and then not getting the part because you’re the wrong skin colour is a bit sad.

  • What makes gender and sexuality an “issue”?

  • People labelling it as an issue. If people accepted it for what it was instead of labelling it then there wouldn’t be an issue in the first place.

  • What would the world be like for you without these boundaries on gender and sexuality?

  • The world would be different. Maybe better. But I feel like if there weren’t and boundaries on these things, people would just make boundaries on other things.

  • How do you react to people with more conservative or dismissive attitudes on these issues?

  • Well, it makes me annoyed that some people are close minded. Maybe the problem is that they cannot psychologically open their minds to new ideas.

What images are evoked in these questions?

  • Images of suppression and oppression are evoked along with a sense of feeling like there is so much that is to be said but so little opportunity to say it.

In class we also looked at Frantic Assembly's devised piece called "Ignition".
